Once, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar challenged Michael Madhusudan Dutta, "Since you are a master of English, can you write an essay without the English letter E? Even in the 21st century, Michael Madhusudan Dutta's answer was brilliant:

I doubt I can. It’s a major part of many many words. Omitting it is as hard as making muffins without flour. It’s as hard as spitting without saliva, napping without a pillow, driving a train without tracks, sailing to Russia without a boat, and washing your hands without soap. And, anyway, what would I gain? An award? A cash bonus? Bragging rights? Why should I strain my brain? It’s not worth doing.

Madhusudan was one of the greatest Bengali poets of the nineteenth century, and Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar was a prominent Bengali educationist, social reformer, and prose writer. The deep friendship between the two began with some bitterness. Whereas Vidyasagar satirically criticized Michael Madhusudan Dutt's "Tilottama Manshak" poem in 1860.

Vidyasagar used to spend a lot of money with friends and in bars. He has helped Madhusudan many times financially, but once, Vidyasagar was burdened with debt.

Make a Christian Conversion The tragedies in Michael Madhusudan's personal life were numerous. This famous poet passed away at the age of 49 in Calcutta. In order to free Vidyasagar from debt and prevent anyone from dishonoring him, he sold his land before passing away and transferred the proceeds to his close friend.

This witty challenge by Ishwarchandra and Madhusudan in essays without E is a true reflection of the intellectual practice of the time and the genuine friendship that is absent in today's society.
