The first Prime Minister of Undivided Bengal, Tiger of Bengal, Haque Sahib, popularly known as Sher e Bangla Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque, was a renowned politician of the subcontinent. The great national leader of Bengal was born on October 26, 1873, in Saturia village of Rajapur police station of Barisal district and died on April 27, 1962. Ancestral residence of Sher e Bangla in Bauphal Upazila of Patuakhali district. He was the only son of Qazi Muhammad Wazed and Saidunnessa Khatun.

The Prime Minister of Undivided Bengal, Sher Bangla AK Fazlul Haque, was 47 years older than Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Bangabandhu's politics was chalked up to the hand of Sher e Bengal. According to historians, the Lahore Resolution of 1940 by this sharp political personality was the basis for the subsequent partition of India.


Bangabandhu's "unfinished autobiography" shows how popular a leader AK Fazlul Haque was in the history of Bengal. Bangabandhu wrote, ' remembering one day, discussing politics with my father until two in the morning. Baba was pleased to hear the discussion and said never to make any personal attack against AK Fazlul Haque. One day, Mother said, "Dad, whatever you do, do not say anything against Haque Sahib. This great man did not suddenly become 'Sher e Bangla. The soil of Bengal also fell in love with him.'

All these years later, in 2004, AK Fazlul Haque, the first Prime Minister of undivided Bengal, was ranked fourth in a BBC Bengali poll titled The Greatest Bengali Ever.


This great personality is known as 'Shere Bangla' and 'Haq Sahib' to the political circles and familiar people. He held many political careers during his lifetime. Some of the notable ones are - Mayor of Calcutta (1935), Prime Minister of undivided Bengal (1937 – 1943), Lahore Resolution (1940), Prime Minister of East Pakistan (1954), Home Minister of Pakistan (1955), Governor of East Pakistan (1956 – 1958). He was one of the prominent leaders in creating the United Front.
