'The Lake Kaptai' nearly erased by history

Kaptai is the only artificial lake in Bangladesh. In 1956, a dam was constructed on the Karnaphuli River to build a hydroeRiverlectric power station in the Rangamati district of the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, resulting in the inundation of a large area and the creation of a lake, popularly known as the Kaptai lake.

The then-Pakistani government started the construction of this project in 1956 with American funding and completed it in 1962. At present, around aprx 230 MW of electricity is supplied to the national grid from a total of five units here.

Besides about 54,000 acres of agricultural land, 29 square miles of government-reserved forest and 234 square miles of unclassified forests were also submerged. The old Chakma palace also sank. A total of 100,000 people from 18,000 families were displaced. That's why this lake is also called The Lake of tears And the present generation knows very little about its history.


The tourism industry of the Rangamati area has created around Kaptai Lake. Surrounded by mountains, this area is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the country. Hanging Bridge, Trawler viewing of Shuvolong Falls, New Chakma Rajbari, Razvan Vihar on the outskirts of the city, etc. are some of the attractions of the pilgrims and tourists.
