Hemantashashi Gupta was a determined leading woman who became a widow and remarried in a revolutionary decision in 1890, the first widow marriage in Brahmo society in India. Due to his conversion to Brahma, Atul Prasad Sen's grandfather, the leader of the Brahmo community, the renowned singer-songwriter Zamindar Kali Narayan Gupta, was displaced by the Hindus from Bhatpatar Zamindari in Narsingdi and settled permanently at Kaowraid, Sreepur, buying Jamindari of that area.
After the death of her husband Ram Prasad Sen in 1884, Hemant Shashi moved with her son Atul to her father's house in Kawraid, who became a famous poet, musician, and lawyer barrister in her later years.
