City dwellers were on strike in front of the Secretariat against the then-dictator Ershad. Starting with the rally, the police baton charge, -tear gas throwing. At one point, Nur Hossain, who had the slogan "Destroy dictatorship" on his chest and "Democracy liberated" on his back, was shot and seriously injured by police.

While taking Nur Hossain to the hospital, he got down from the rickshaw and was picked up by the police. Nur Hossain, who was in an agony of death, was grabbed by a policeman and pressed on his chest with his boots. This way Nur Hossain was brutally killed that day. This sacrifice of Nur Hossain accelerated the movement of pro-democracy people against the then-anti-Ershad dictatorship.

Two more people were killed in the police firing that day. Although the day was initially observed as "historic November 10", the Awami League started celebrating the day as "Nur Hossain Day". He was born in 1961 in Barisal. He used to come to Dhaka in search of livelihood and drive auto-rickshaws.

In 1996, Ershad formally apologized to the National Assembly for the death of Nur Hossain. Shaheed Noor Hossain Day is a national day in Bangladesh.
