Language Martyr Abul Barkat

The deaths of Abul Barkat, his mother, father, and brother seem to be tied in the same thread. They all died on Ekushey on the same date in different months of different years.

Abul Barkat's nick name was Abai. He passed Intermediate in 1947. Then higher education moved to Bangladesh in 1948. He started living in the house of Mama Abdul Malek at Vishnu Priya Bhavan in Purana Paltan, Dhaka. That year, he was admitted to the Honors course in the Department of Political Science at Dhaka University. In 1951, he finished fourth in the second class in the Honors examination and received his M.A. Get admitted in the last episode.


Dhaka was agitated to make Bengali the state language. On February 21, 1952, Abul Barkat was shot dead on the verandah of Shed No. 12 of the hostel when police opened fire on a group of students protesting against Section 144 on the road in front of Dhaka Medical College. Barkat was shot in the lower abdomen.

He was taken immediately to the emergency department of the hospital. Barkat said it was complicated and would not live anymore. He was admitted to the hospital at 8 pm due to excessive bleeding. Abdus Salam, Rafiq, Jabbar, Shafiur Rahman, and others were martyred in the state language movement. However, the exact number of martyrs is unknown because the bodies of martyrs were disappeared from the morgue by the military and police.

 

The next day, their Janaza will be held. When the students announced this to Mike, the police removed the body from the morgue that night. Abul Barkat's uncle was the deputy secretary who rescued Abul Barkat's body from the police. Abul Barkat's body was buried at Azimpur's old graveyard on February 21 at around 10 pm, Ignoring the police barricades. The next evening the news came to his village Babala. The parents were devastated.

Later, his mother, Hasina Begum, inaugurated the Central Shaheed Minar on February 21, 1983.

After the death of Language Martyr Abul Barkat his parents decided to move permanently to Dhaka so that at least every year, he could visit his son, who was sleeping in Azimpur cemetery. Hasina Banu moved to India from India in 1984, the year after Barkat's father, Shamsuzzoha Bhulu Mia, died in India on July 21, 1983.

 

Honours:

  • In 2000, the Bangladesh government awarded the Ekushey Padak to Barkat.

  • A museum named Barkat Smriti Museum has been established on the campus of Dhaka University.

  • A documentary on his biography has been made called Bayannar Michi.

  • The Barkat Mela begins with a torch procession on the night of February 20 every year at Babla village in Murshidabad.

  • In 1981, the then President Ziaur Rahman donated 6 percent of the land to Hasina Banu.

  • In his memory, Gazipur Stadium is called Shahid Barkat Stadium.

  • In his memory, the name of the auditorium of Titumir College is"Shahid Barkat Auditorium".
