Barrister Atul Prasad Sen

Updated: May 10, 2023

Marriage to cousins was not legal in India and England. That is why Atul Prasad Sen took his cousin Hem kusum to Scotland and married her. Atul Prasad went to London in 1892 to study law to obtain a Barrister's degree. A few days later, his maternal uncle came there with his daughter Hemkusum; he fell in love with her and decided to marry.

At that time, such marriages between maternal brothers and sisters were not acceptable under the law of India. The family raised strong objections. However, Atul Prasad remained stolid in his decision. Lawyer Barrister Atul Prasad, on the advice of his senior colleague Satyendraprasanna Singh, traveled to Scotland, where such marriages were legal. Atul Prasad went to Scotland and married his cousin Hemkusum in 1900.

He failed to make fame for himself in London as a lawyer. He returned to India with his son Dilip Kumar in 1902 and started practicing in Rangpur and Calcutta. He later moved to Lucknow, where he established himself as one of the best lawyers and was elected president of the Bar Association and the Bar Council. He was also deeply involved in Lucknow's culture and way of life. The street was named after him during his lifetime. At that time, Atul Prasad built a massive house in Kesharbagh, Lucknow, with 33 thousand rupees.

However, even after all this, because of that unequal marriage, no relatives had any relationship with them, and this marriage life was not happy.

Atul Prasad's mother, Hemantashashi, moved into her son's family. At this time, the quarrel between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law started. As a result, the husband and wife eventually divorced. Hemkusum also demanded that his mother's picture be removed after Hemant Shashir's death. Atul Prasad was reluctant to disrespect his mother's image in this way. As a result, Hemkusum left her husband's house for good and did not return.
